Reuben Sandwich Bowl - Jeep Talk Show

August 11, 2016

Hey guys, just wanted to share some news with you. Besides being a TODAY Show Food Contributor , I am also now a Jeep Talk Show food and travel contributor. Jeep Talk Show - it's where you go when you're not off road! JTS is a LIVE show - weekly podcast, although I won't be on weekly, I will contribute a segment once every month or so. I will be showing you some great ideas on cooking on the trail or packing food for the trail and some ideas for your next Jeep adventure. The one below is from my first JTS segment that aired on Thursday, May 26, 2016. And I will let you guys know when I do my next JTS segment. It should be within the next month. It will be a segment on the first ever SLSD Jeep Invasion. The Silver Lake Sand Dunes Jeep Invasion took place June 3-5, 2016 in West Michigan and was a huge success. We are already in the beginning stages on planning the 2nd SLSD Jeep Invasion for 2017. So stayed tuned for that upcoming segment, will post more details soon.

If you like to use your slow cooker in the winter, consider using your car's engine as a slow cooker in the summer. How fun is that? The best part of a slow cooker is you don't have to tend to your food while it's cooking, you simply gather your ingredients and let the heat do its job. That is the same concept of cooking with heat from your vehicle. I cook this way in the summer on my Jeep at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and in the fall and spring out in Colorado and Utah in the mountains. I have also cooked this way on my snowmobile in the winter while up in the mountains near Jackson Hole, Wy. Sometimes we need to get out of the kitchen and go outside and enjoy all of America's great adventures and food. Happy Picnicking!

Reuben Sandwich Bowl

INGREDIENTS-

14 ounce bread bowl - white, pumpernickel or rye

1 teaspoon caraway seeds

8 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced or shredded

8 ounces sliced pastrami or corned beef

1/2 cup sauerkraut, drained

1/4 cup thousand island dressing

DIRECTIONS-

Cut the top off of the bread bowl and hollow out the bowl. You won't need the inside bread for this recipe, but keep the bread. The insides make great breadcrumbs.

Add the caraway seeds to the bottom of the bowl (unless you are using rye bread).

Then, add half of the cheese. Then add some meat, followed by some sauerkraut. Pour on some thousand island dressing and add more cheese. Add the bread top back on and wrap tightly in 3 layers of aluminum foil.

Add foil wrapped bread bowl to a hot spot under vehicles hood, making sure that it is being compressed by the hood. You don't want it sliding around. The best place is usually near the exhaust manifold. Use common sense and don't place it near moving parts under the hood.

Go for your summer drive and in a few hours, you'll be ready to stop and have your picnic.

Remove your bread bowl (be careful it will be warm), remove from foil and cut into quarters. Add extra thousand island for dipping.

Note-

For this size bread bowl, I found that 2-3 hours was perfect. One hour wasn't enough to melt the cheese, but over 3 hours and it starts to dry out. I have a 2014 Jeep Rubicon and my bread bowl (with 3 layers of foil) fit perfectly next to my air intake. You want the sandwich to be compressed so it doesn't move all around, but your don't want it to be squished because then you could encounter some leakage. You don't want that!
